good stuff!

Friday two weeks ago I got a call from a guy named Sean. He obviously knew me well and while I recognized his voice, I just couldn't figure out how I knew him. I pretended I did though asking him how he had been, yadda, yadda, yadda. Then he said, "Are you by any chance still interested in an Oracle programming position with the City of Austin?" and then it clicked. It was my old co-worker from 5 years ago.

There have been many times when I thought I should not have left the position I had with the City back then, except that I doubt I would have met Bob if I hadn't. This call from Sean was like an answered prayer. The position is in the GIS (Geographical Information Systems) department and with a few of my old co-workers. The following Tuesday I sent him my resume, two days later I met with the hiring supervisor and he offered me the position right then and there. I couldn't believe it.

The only down side is that the position is temporary until October when the new budget goes into effect. Until then I will get no benefits as in no health insurance, no holidays, no vacation. At first Bob and I were wondering if I should still accept the position, but we figured in the long run, it will be MUCH better. I also negotiated a fairly good deal with the supervisor (Bert). He is going to pay me for the 9 days we will be gone for our cruise, and he will let me go to Germany in November for 2 weeks and that will be paid as well. So we'll have to pay for COBRA over the next 6 months, but that's ok.

There are so many reasons for taking this position. For one, it will be a 10 to 15 minute drive versus a 30 to 45 minute drive to work. Bob is on my health insurance and at the City we will pay half of what we currently pay. I will be working on an Oracle database versus a Progress database. We will be redesigning the City's 911 system versus working on insurance. More holidays, accrued vacation and sick time versus all being in one pool, and from what I can tell, a competent supervisor. He said he does not ask his salaried employees to "make up time" when they have to go to the doctor for example. At my current position, that's what I have to do. If I leave an hour early one day I have to make up the time that same week or take vacation time, even if I worked 50 hours the previous week.

Anyway, I am excited and I can't help but think this is from God.
